New UH Loss Control Campaign Examines Challenges Facing Social Services Segment
More workers are injured in the social service and health care industry than any other. In 2014, this segment had 164,440 days-away-from-work incidents, the most of any private sector industry and nearly 40,000 more than the next closest industry sector – manufacturing.
As a subset of this segment, social service and nonprofit work encompasses a wide variety of jobs and careers, including child care workers, home health aides, personal care aides, rehabilitation counselors, social workers, and substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in this field will grow 10% from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. This means that injuries are likely to increase as well.
To that end, United Heartland is committed to helping our social service customers keep their employees safe on the job through dedicated, expert loss control service. Our Social Service Loss Control Campaign examines the hazards that can arise in this segment as your workers attempt to serve the varied needs of your clients.
One such challenge is safe client transfer and assistance. In the first phase of the campaign, we examine the types of organizations where this issue is a top concern. We also provide three examples of success where United Heartland has been able to collaborate with social service customers and identify solutions and tools that can help them transfer clients without injury to either their employees or the individuals they serve. Additionally, we also offer downloadable materials and resources about safe client transfer and assistance so you can begin reviewing your own programs and determine how United Heartland may be able to offer assistance in strengthening your current transfer protocols and reducing injury trends.
If you know of others involved in the social services or nonprofit industry who may be interested in our campaign, please consider sending them a link to this page or encourage them to subscribe to our free Risk Connection e-blasts here.
