UH WalkSafe: Just When You Thought You Were Done With Winter…

Monika_screenshotIf you’re on social media, you may have seen this meme pop up recently: “It’s like winter is really mad and keeps storming out of the room and then comes back yelling, ‘And another thing.’” It’s a pretty apt description for this time of year when many of us are starting to get a taste of warmer spring weather, but then we’re brutally smacked back to reality with cold temperatures, snow storms and icy conditions.

In fact, this time of year can often be the most dangerous because you can get lulled into complacency thinking that winter-related slip and fall hazards are no longer a concern. But as Loss Control Consultant Monika Gierula discusses in our latest WalkSafe video blog, “UH WalkSafe: Winter Isn’t Over Yet,” it’s during this period that fluctuating temperatures and snow bursts can lead to black ice on roadways and sidewalks, and result in hazardous conditions. This is a great one to share with your employees as a quick reminder about slip and fall risks for the next few weeks.

While United Heartland’s WalkSafe campaign is ending for the season, it’s important to remember that slips and falls can happen anywhere at any time of year. Poor housekeeping, improper ladder use and refusing to use three-point contact when entering or exiting vehicles can also be contributing factors to slips and falls. Our Assess, Elevations and Prevent resources on these issues can help educate you and your employees on how to prevent these hazards. Additional materials are available year-round at UnitedHeartland.com/WalkSafe.
